Review
BOINC client is an application that allows you to lend your PC's power. It stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing and was originally intended for users to share their processing power with the SETI@HOME initiative. It used volunteers' computers to analyze recordings of radio transmissions from outer space, searching for intelligent forms of life.
This application sits on your system waiting for the servers to provide work for it to do. Most of the work consists in analyzing data gathered by scanners and telescopes. However, nowadays, several projects can be added to the client. Those initiatives range from mathematics, medicine, and language, to finding intelligent life and predicting storms and earthquakes.
The application itself has two modes: basic and advanced. The basic mode shows you a wizard every time that you want to add a project. There are many available. The advanced view shows a lot more detail and can be more customized than the basic one. It also shows more about the projects, the tasks and it even has a statistics window. The general idea proposed by BOINC is that by sharing your unused processing power, they can aid several projects. There are currently millions of people helping a lot of causes with BOINC. |
- It does a great job of staying unobtrusive.
- Support for several platforms and projects.
- Includes a screensaver.
